“Be like the birds. Sing after every storm.”

-James Rivett

Every day in our communities, compassionate people witness quiet, human storms and are compelled to help in positive ways.

Their small acts can make big differences. It’s why The Canary Fund supports those acts with contributions that can further the impact of their good work.

The Canary Fund is a 501(c)(3) organization. All donations are tax deductible.

Our Why

The Canary Fund began as a way to honor the life and lifelong generosity of James Rivett (1958-2018), inspired by the canaries brought into coal mines to sense and respond to the environment.

Seeds for Deeds

We believe in change at the local level. We recognize the activists, visionaries and change-makers of Northeast Wisconsin who see and work to address unmet needs in our communities. Our mission at The Canary Fund is to provide those individuals with seed grants between $1,500 and $5,000.

Seed grants are an important way to support individuals and community groups that aren’t necessarily recognized as registered or established organizations, and offer funding to help take early-stage projects to the next level. The funds help to provide acknowledgement and validation that their activities are important and valued in our community. Oftentimes, our seed grants have a multiplier effect in that they help individuals leverage their contributions into additional funding.
